USCG Auxiliary Diversity Moment - June 2023: Diversity of Pride

Shipmates, please take a few minutes to discuss this information with your members at your next meeting. Please keep in mind that utilizing these "Moments" fulfills one of the requirements in the NACO 3-Star Diversity application.

"Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day." –Winston Churchill

Pride Month is a time of celebration and recognition for the LGBTQ+ community. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of diversity and inclusivity, recognizing the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance. The significance of Pride Month extends beyond this community and affects us all as members of society. We should be all able to celebrate the freedom to be who we are and to express ourselves without fear of discrimination or persecution. The importance of inclusivity and diversity cannot be overstated—it truly is something that, as Americans, we all have in common. When we embrace and celebrate the differences that make us unique, we create a more accepting and tolerant society. Pride Month is celebrated for different reasons: it is more than just a celebration of identity and the human spirit. It is a reminder that all individuals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their orientation or identity. By promoting Pride Month, we promote these values and help to create a more just and equitable world for all, employing the benefits of a diverse workforce to successfully carry out the various missions of the Coast Guard and CG Auxiliary. C.C. Francis wrote: "A culture of true diversity begets prosperity — diversity of background, of identity, and of thought, without fear of repercussion. The best minds in society (from wherever they come) must be able to offer their authentic selves and viewpoints." By recognizing the contributions of all, we honor their struggles and help to create a more equitable society. Let's celebrate the human spirit and promote the values of dignity and respect for all individuals. We will all benefit from this approach.
